Blue Ridge Blue & Gray
Blue
Ridge Blue & Gray is a play about the Civil War in
Northwestern North Carolina. Written as historical fiction,
fictional characters tell the story of actual events. The
story centers on the Reverend Levi Norris, an itinerate
Methodist Minister who served as a Chaplin at Camp Mast, an
actual training facility for Watauga and Ashe County Home
guards. Reverend Norris is torn between loyalty to his
friends and congregants and loyalty to his calling and
conscience. Blue Ridge Blue & Gray was first performed on
December 3rd, 1998 at Farthing Auditorium on the campus of
Appalachian State University.
Presentation Formats
Blue Ridge Blue & Gray can be presented in three formats:
The full play, the concert version, or as a conversation.
The
full presentation of Blue Ridge Blue & Gray includes a cast
of eight and a minimum crew of three. The play runs in two,
45-minute acts and is appropriate for audiences 8th grade to
adult.
The concert version focuses on the music, with narrations
used to set-up the songs. BRB&G features seventeen songs,
most of which are a cappella hymns and ballads. Like the
play, the concert is in two sets, about 45-minutes each.
The Conversation presentation is designed primarily as an
educational activity. Joe Shannon responds to the interests
of his audience, which may include an overview of the Civil
War in northwestern North Carolina, his writing process, or
the arts in education. Presentations are generally an hour
and are appropriate for audiences 8th grade to adult.
