The first Mountainhome Music
concert was held on February 4, 1994. The location was a
downtown Boone deli, Our Daily Bread. This concert featured Steve
Lewis, Rachel Nelson, Becca Eggers-Gryder, and myself. ASU
filmed this and many subsequent shows for broadcast on local
educational television.
Mountainhome Music (MHM) is
a concert series and not a building. As such, we have been
dependent on the community to provide a venue. Over the
years, and as the audience has grown, we have used a variety
of venues. For the past four years we have done most summer
concerts at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Boone and fall
programs in Blowing Rock at the Stage Company auditorium in
Blowing Rock. Other churches and venues have also been very
accommodating and gracious.
To date, we are approaching our 300th show. We have had
three National Folk-life Award winners, seven North Carolina
Folk Heritage Award winners, and over 2000 local and
regional performers on our stage. Shows have been broadcast
on educational television in Watauga County and in
Winston-Salem, on local FM radios station (WATA, WECR) and
on WETS public radio in Johnson City, Tennessee.
